Snow will cause a slippery evening commute in Boston

Dave Epstein

A low-grade snowstorm will drop one to three inches of snow on the Greater Boston area Tuesday afternoon, causing a slippery ride home during evening rush hour.Snow broke out as early as 1 p.m. across western Massachusetts, and began in Boston just before the commute. There’s already two inches of snow on the ground in southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, so expect that it will take you longer than usual to arrive home.

This isn’t a big storm. By the time it ends, most areas will have about two to three inches on the ground.

Communities over northern Massachusetts may see the least amount of snow, while Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard may get only a dusting of less than an inch.

Since temperatures are cold, the snow will be light and fluffy.

Temperatures remain below freezing today.

If the snow stops for a while in the middle of the evening, it should resume for about three hours after midnight. Wednesday will be milder, with highs reaching well into the 30s to perhaps 40 degrees.

Cold air returns for the end of the week and weekend. It will be dry.

There’s been talk about a storm potentially arriving Sunday night and Monday. The weather jury is still in deliberations on which way to go with this storm. As we get closer to the weekend, I am confident we will have a verdict. Until then, it’s wait and see.
