Man struck by falling tree branch dies

A Canton man struck by a falling tree limb on Friday died late Saturday afternoon, according to the Canton Police Department. It’s the second death caused by falling branches in the town following Friday’s unexpected snowstorm.

“We’re dealing with two freak, tragic incidents,’’ said Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz during a Saturday press conference held before the man had passed away.

Around 11 p.m. Friday night, the police department responded to a call about smoke in a house on Longmeadow Drive. When officers arrived, a neighbor alerted them to the man, 48, who’d been struck on the head by a pine tree limb as he tended to a backyard hockey rink.

“The tree limb was approximately 40 to 50 feet above him,’’ Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said. “He did not hear it and had no time to react.’’

Police said fire department personnel began first aid, and the man was transported to Boston Medical Center.

On Friday evening, a 6-year-old from Canton died in the hospital after she was struck by a fallen tree limb and pinned down.

“It’s very difficult to wrap our heads around these two incidents,’’ Doody said. “It’s really unprecedented for us in our community.’’

Doody and Berkowitz suggested Canton residents stay inside and be careful of trees that look healthy but could be ready to snap during future storms.

“It wasn’t like it was a rotted tree or anything. It was just a tree in a yard just like you have and I have in our backyard. It just came down,’’ Berkowitz said.
