The lack of sensible delivery routes was at the heart of The Boston Globe’s delivery troubles this month, the newspaper reports.

The paper switched delivery companies at the end of December, changing from Publishers Circulation Fulfillment to ACI Media Group. The switch to ACI followed a year of review, as company executives sought to provide better service and cut costs, the Globe reports.

In the first week with ACI, tens of thousands of papers went undelivered and calls from upset subscribers overwhelmed the Globe’s phone lines. Many of the Globe’s editorial, advertising, and technology employees pitched in delivering papers.

“Because route sequencing is a relatively easy part of such a difficult process, our team never called out sequencing as a major problem until we learned of it in real time,’’ Andrew Perlmutter, executive vice president of Boston Globe Media Partners, told the Globe.
