UberPOOL is expanding in Greater Boston

Uber’s ridesharing service, UberPOOL, is expanding to nine new areas in Greater Boston.

The much-cheaper Uber feature, which allows you to share your ride with other riders going to a nearby destination, is now available in East Boston, Everett, Malden, Mattapan, Medford, Quincy, Revere, Roslindale, and Winthrop. That effectively doubles Boston’s UberPOOL reach, BostInno reports.

The expansion of UberPOOL is likely due to the unreliability of local public transit, BostInno notes. Recently, the MBTA has seen a slew of technological issues, including derailments, track issues, and regularly-occurring signal problems.

And now, when the T is failing them, more Bostonians can affordably take an Uber. Pool gives users a set price for their trip as soon as they hail their cab, and it’s always less expensive than the standard UberX option. You can hail an UberPOOL for up to two people.

Until the end of the month, UberPOOL will have promotional prices during the service’s busiest hours, according to the news release. Peak hours from Monday through Saturday will feature pool prices that are 50 percent cheaper than UberX prices.

Now it appears you can make a door-to-door trip across the city at a price that won’t make you want to cry. Just in time for the arrival of frigidly cold weather.
