Demolition began Monday on the well-known Spag’s building on Route 9 in Shrewsbury, The Boston Globe reports.

The site of the “Where your cash buys you more’’ discount store, which drew generations of shoppers in Central Massachusetts, will be converted to a 375,000-square-foot mixed housing and retail space, which will include a Whole Foods.

The store, founded by Anthony “Spag’’ Borgatti, operated until 2013, selling household goods at low prices.
