Police alerted to a dog in distress by ‘Lassie’-like actions of a terrier

Police in Orange learned on Tuesday that under the right circumstances, ordinary-looking dogs can turn into “Lassie.’’

The department responded to a call for a woman with a medical condition needing to be transported to a hospital. Police said the woman had two “terrier type dogs’’ who were outside and ran down the road when police arrived, avoiding the officers trying to catch them.

A few hours later, while an officer drove through the neighborhood hoping to spot the runaways, one of the dogs ran up to him barking.

“The dog insisted that the officer follow him through a field to an embankment,’’ Orange police said in a statement.

The officer then saw the other dog had slid on the ice, about 30 feet down to the bottom of the embankment, and was caught in the overgrowth.

Police said firefighters used a ground ladder to reach and rescue the snared dog. Both dogs were taken to a veterinarian to be checked by animal control.
