Endicott College’s newest residence hall will honor Pete Frates, former captain of the Boston College baseball team and co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The college held a ground-breaking ceremony for the new dorm on Wednesday.

“We are honored to recognize Pete and name this facility for him,’’ said college president Richard Wylie in a statement. “His strong personal and professional values make him a role model whose name and reputation should be preserved for generations.’’

Frates, a Beverly native, has been actively raising awareness about ALS since his diagnosis in 2012 at the age of 27. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised over $225 million worldwide in 2014.

The residence hall, expected to open in the fall of 2016, will house 225 students on the east side of the campus.

Pete Frates’ parents, John and Nancy, and his wife and daughter, Julie Kowalik and Lucy, helped Wylie with the groundbreaking.
