Four injured when homemade pipebomb explodes in Vermont home

State police and federal authorities are investigating the incident.

Four people were injured Wednesday night when a homemade pipebomb exploded inside a Northfield apartment building.

Vermont State Police said in a statement Thursday that five people were in the apartment where the explosion occurred.

During the initial sweep of the scene by the state police bomb squad, a second homemade explosive device was discovered, police spokesman Scott Waterman told Boston.com. The device was rendered safe, and once the area was determined safe, evacuated residents were allowed to return home, he said.

State police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and the incident is being jointly investigated by state police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“At this time there doesn’t appear to be any connection to any potential terrorism,’’ Waterman said.

Mark McCloud, a resident of Northfield, was seriously injured in the explosion, according to a statement from the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A man who answered the phone at a number listed for McCloud in Northfield said McCloud no longer lives there.

Washington County State’s Attorney Scott Williams said McCloud lost a hand in the explosion and has a “decent and varied record,’’ which included convictions for violating an abuse prevention order and resisting arrest, according to a report by the Burlington Free Press.

The Free Press reported one of the injured individuals was holding the bomb when it exploded.

State police and the ATF executed a warrant search of the apartment involved Thursday morning. Police said it was during the search that investigators determined the explosion was caused by a homemade pipebomb.
