It made the journey from Nova Scotia, and next week, Boston’s Christmas tree will be officially celebrated with the annual tree lighting ceremony on the Common.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil will join Mayor Marty Walsh, Santa Claus, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on stage beginning at 6 p.m. on December 3. Cast members from Elf: The Musical, Berklee College’s a capella group Pitch Slapped, and The Voice contestant Michelle Brooks Thompson will also perform during the celebration.

“For 74 years, the Boston Common Tree Lighting ceremony has been a symbol of the start of the holiday season in Boston,’’ said Mayor Walsh in a statement. “From the time Halifax sent Boston the first Christmas tree as a gift of appreciation for our help many years ago, we have shared this tradition that commemorates not only the holidays, but also a bond between the people of Nova Scotia and our City. I am proud to keep our long standing tradition alive this holiday season, and look forward to season full of fun holiday festivities and community spirit.’’
