Boston police warn sports fans of counterfeit tickets

Boston police said New England sports fans should be “wary’’ of purchasing tickets from sources other than an authorized ticket agency after the department arrested a man selling fake tickets on Saturday.

According to police, a local father arrived at Gillette Stadium for a November 8 New England Patriots game with his son only to discover the tickets he’d purchased for “hundreds of dollars’’ through a Craigslist “connection’’ were counterfeit. The family members of the man found the scalper online offering to sell tickets and contacted Boston detectives, who coordinated a meeting with the seller.

Detectives met the suspect, Shamorie Washington, 21, of New York City at South Station on Saturday after agreeing to purchase four tickets for $700. Once it was confirmed the tickets were fake, Washington was taken into custody and has since been linked to other fraudulent sales, according to police.

Washington was arraigned on Monday in Boston Municipal Court on charges of larceny over $250 and larceny over $250 by scheme, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office. He is being represented by Thomas McCarthy, who could not be reached for comment. The judge imposed $250 bail, and Washington will return to court on December 4.

The department is asking anyone with information on the selling of counterfeit tickets to contact them. Information can be provided anonymously at t 1-800-494-TIPS or texting the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).
