A protest against Governor Charlie Baker’s opposition to allowing Syrian refugees into the state is planned for Friday evening.

Over 2,000 people said they would attend the protest outside the State House on the event’s Facebook page:

This is a shameful decision. We refuse to close the door on people escaping violence and seeking safety for themselves and their loved ones.

Join us at 6:30 on Friday at the State House to say no to Islamophobia and the scapegoating of Syrian refugees! Racist fear has got to go. Refugees from all countries are welcome here!

The event is being hosted by the International Socialist Organization Boston, and its co-sponsors include Boston Solidarity with Syrian Refugees, Northeastern University Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston, and the Unitarian Universalist Mass Action Network.

Earlier this week, Baker said the safety of Massachusetts residents were his first priority and that he couldn’t agree to allow refugees from Syria into the state until he knows more about the federal government’s vetting process.
