Senate president now says he supports $10.9 million for UMass

Senate President Stanley C. Rosenberg said Wednesday he will push to include $10.9 million in a mid-year spending bill to the University of Massachusetts, according to a report by The Boston Globe.

The apparent reversal by the senate president, an alumus of UMass, followed criticism by UMass trustees and President Martin T. Meehan after the university’s request to retroactively fund staff and faculty raises was not included in a spending bill approved last week. The university said if it did not get the money, it would have to make $10.9 million in cuts midyear.

Meehan told the Globe that cuts will still be necessary even if they get the funding.

Rosenberg said Wednesday that the university has agreed that if the funding is received, $5 million will be dedicated to need-based scholarships for students.
