State environmental police believe a dead black bear found by Route 128 in Newton Thursday is the same bear that was sighted in the town last week.

Officers at the scene believed the bear was hit by a vehicle, police spokeswoman Katie Gronendyke said.

The bear, found by Route 128 northbound at Route 30, is about 90 pounds, matching the description of the bear seen last week.

Gronendyke said police responded to a bear sighting in Newton as recently as Monday, but could not find it.
