Burlington police will conduct prostitution stings in coming months
The Burlington Police Department will be conducting a series of prostitution sweeps over the next several months.
The sting operations will focus especially on sex trafficking and sex crimes conducted through online sites, using local hotels as meeting locations, according to a police statement.
Police said they will use “prominent’’ classified sites to help generate leads.
“We conduct these operations for one reason: Prostitution is not a victimless crime,’’ said Burlington Police Det. Sgt. Timothy McDonough in a statement. “In most cases, the real women behind the online ads are victims of human trafficking. We know that people who torment and exploit women and children use online ads to do their business, and we will continue to be aggressive in pushing sex crimes out of our community.’’
The department arrested seven men and one woman in 2014 after an officer posted a sting ad online offering sex for a fee.
