Swampscott cancels football games amid player investigation
The Swampscott Public Schools have canceled the high school’s varsity and junior varsity football games this week due to an ongoing investigation into an incident at Blocksidge Field Friday night allegedly involving players, according to a statement from the superintendent on Tuesday. No information about the nature of the incident was released.
Nathan Bonneau, spokesman for the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, said the group was aware of the situation in Swampscott involving the football team.
Bonneau said whatever comes out in the investigation will be handled by the school.
“These types of situations when they come up, they’re always handled by the schools at the local level,’’ Bonneau said.
The statement from Superintendent Pamela R. H. Angelakis:
On Monday morning, I became aware of an incident allegedly involving members of the Swampscott High School football team at Blocksidge Field Friday night. After speaking with the Swampscott Police Department, it became clear that the incident required further investigation by Swampscott Public Schools.
From what I have been able to determine, there were no adults present at the time of the incident. Understanding that all the facts have yet to be presented, I do not feel it is appropriate for the football team to take the field representing Swampscott High School at this time. As a result, we have canceled Thursday’s freshman game and Saturday’s varsity game vs. Saugus.
While the investigation is ongoing, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time.
