Police identify Massachusetts man who died surfing in Maine
Kennebunk police in Maine have identified the man who died surfing on Gooch Beach last week as Andrew F. Payson, a 51-year-old from Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
Police Chief Robert MacKenzie said Monday police are still waiting for the medical examiner’s office to determine a cause of death.
Police received a call for a surfer in distress around 3:42 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23. In the call, police were told the surfer had been pulled out of the water and was being given CPR, according to MacKenzie.
Payson was transferred to a hospital, where he later died.
Other surfers at the beach didn’t know Payson, and no witnesses saw him in distress at the time other than when he was pulled out of the water, according to MacKenzie.
