Restorations on the USS Constitution, the oldest warship still afloat in the world, have been underway since the ship entered dry dock in the Charlestown Navy Yard two months ago.

The project is expected to take more than two years and cost between $12 million and $15 million, The Boston Globe reported. The main focus is on the ship’s hull, which must be covered with more than 3,000 copper sheets to protect it from marine life that may eat its wood base. Crews will also replace rotted wood and make repairs to the masts.

This isn’t Old Ironsides’ first makeover. Crews restore the more than 200-year-old ship every 15 to 20 years.
