What you don’t want to know: the calories in the Chipotle burrito hack

Apartment List intern Dylan Grosz has discovered how to get more burrito for your buck at Chipotle, by scientifically testing six ordering hacks at the famous chain.

What he found is that by employing all six hacks, he added significant volume to his burrito without increasing the cost—86 percent more burrito to be exact.

That’s 32 ounces of burrito goodness.

But what does this super-sized burrito mean for your waistline? Nothing good.

By using Chipotle’s nutrition calculator, we estimated the caloric intake of this colossal meal. We multiplied the regular serving’s calories by the percentage increase each hack added to the burrito. Get ready for some scary diet math.

The hacks:

Ask for both kinds of rice.

Rice: 210 calories x 1.93 = 405.3 calories

Order both types of beans.

Black beans: 120 calories / 2 = 60 calories x 1.92 = 115.2 calories

Pinto: 115 calories / 2 = 57.5 x 1.92 = 110.4 calories

Order half/half meats.

Chicken: 180 /2 = 90 x 1.54 = 138.6 calories

Steak: 190 / 2 = 95 x 1.54 = 146.3 calories

Add fajita vegetables and corn salsa.

Corn salsa = 80 calories

Fajita veggies = 20 calories

Get a burrito bowl with a tortilla on the side.

Total x 1.15 = 1,168.17 calories

Flour tortilla: (300) x (2) = 600 calories

Total = 1,768.17 calories

That number could be damaging to your diet alone, but this experiment was conducted without guacamole or sour cream in the order to help make the weighing of the ingredients less messy. That’s not realistic for most burrito-enthusiasts—of course we want the guac.

Plus sour cream = 115 calories

Plus cheese = 100 calories

Plus guac (for that extra charge) = 230 calories

The grand total of the 32 ounce burrito with sour cream and guacamole?

A whopping 2,213 calories.

According to the National Health Service (NHS), the average adult needs approximately 2,700 calories per day for men and 2,200 for women.

For an American woman, one hacked burrito would be an entire day’s calorie intake.
