Patrick Carrerio drove to the Moakley Courthouse on Wednesday, where Dzkhokhar Tsarnaev’s formal sentencing was taking place, to express his opposition to the death penalty, according to Boston police.

But police stopped the 24-year-old from Woburn in his vehicle after he drove past a security checkpoint and jumped a curb in order to reach a restricted area that was about 75 feet from the courthouse, police said.

When police searched his car, they found what appeared to be a meat cleaver, though police said Carrerio did not threaten anyone with, or use the knife.

Carrerio was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with failure to stop for a police officer, disorderly conduct, and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon (meat cleaver), police said.
