State trooper shoots, kills suspect near BU campus

Police investigate the scene where a man was fatally shot by a state trooper on a footbridge near Boston University. Harrison Hill for The Boston Globe

Boston University police were looking for a man who had outstanding warrants around the Charles River Esplanade on Friday afternoon. Just after 2 p.m., they encountered a man, who they believed to be the suspect, State Police Colonel Timothy Alben said at a press conference.

The man ran from the officers and brandished a knife, Alben said. He then ran onto Storrow Drive, back onto the Esplanade, and onto a footbridge, he said.

A uniformed state trooper, coming up the other side of the bridge, encountered the man halfway across, according to Alben. The man made threatening gestures and a conversation took place between him and the trooper, Alben said. The trooper ordered the man to put down his weapon, and when he did not, the trooper fired his weapon, killing him, Alben said.

Alben would not comment on whether the man was who police were searching for and only identified him as “light skinned, possibly Caucasian, possibly Hispanic.’’ The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has identified the man as Santos Laboy, a 45-year-old from Somerville. Alben said the man had multiple addresses in the area and a long criminal history in Boston. He did not give any more details about the encounter, calling it an “ongoing investigation.’’

State police routinely patrol the area, but Alben said departments were alerted by the Boston Regional Intelligence Center about the man BU police were searching for.

No officers were injured in the encounter, he said. The DA’s office is investigating the police-involved shooting.

Boston University police said they had no comment.
