Tara, known as the “Hero Cat,’’ can now be known as the “Hero Dog,’’ too.

The 7-year-old house cat from Bakersfield, California, became famous last year when she fought off a neighborhood dog that attacked her 6-year-old owner, Jeremy Triantafilo, when he was riding his bicycle in the driveway of his family’s home.

The Los Angeles SPCA presented Tara with the 33rd Annual Hero Dog award on Friday, a first for the shelter.

The heroic moment was captured by the Triantafilo family’s home security system, and once posted to YouTube, Tara went viral.

Tara went on the Today Show and threw out a first pitch at a minor league game, and even had a holiday named for her — “The Hero Cat Day’’ — in a California county.

Now, she’s breaking new barriers. The “dog’’ on the glass trophy was scratched out for the occasion to read: “cat.’’
