Watch MIT’s cheetah robot jump over hurdles

MIT’s cheetah robot is growing up so fast.

Less than a year ago, the cyborg cat took its first shaky steps around campus. Now, its creators have programmed the cheetah (which, yes, looks more like a like a block of metal than a cat) to jump and clear 18-inch hurdles on its own.

According to a release from MIT, the cheetah first practiced its skills on a treadmill in a lab. It then moved on to an indoor track, and is now being trained to jump while running on the grass.

Even though the robot weighs as much as a real cheetah, 70 pounds, it can only run at 5 mph. But given the giant leaps it’s taken in the past year, this freaky-looking feline should be able to clear any hurdles life throws at it — as long as they’re under 18 inches.
