Although treadmill-related deaths like that of SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg are rare in the United States, treadmill-related injuries are not, according to a story in The Boston Globe.

Hospital emergency room staff in the U.S. saw 24,400 treadmill-related injuries in 2014, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

For the 10-year period ending in 2012, the commission reported 30 treadmill-related deaths nationwide. By comparison, the University of Florida’s worldwide shark attack summary recorded 8 shark-related fatalities in the U.S. during the same time period.

In 2012, the story continues, emergency rooms treated 62,700 injuries caused by exercise equipment. Treadmill accidents were the most frequent.
