Delinquent Taxpayers Have Until May 15 to Pay
DOR gives 60 days for some to pay back taxes without fee.
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) will give some delinquent taxpayers a two-month grace period to pay without penalty fees. The department announced the May 15 amnesty deadline on Monday.
For certain tax liabilities billed on or before January 1, 2015, overdue penalties will be waived to those who make full payments by May 15. According to the press release, this amnesty program was approved by the Legislature to encourage approximately 24,000 taxpayers to pay their debts without any late fees.
“This is an opportunity for taxpayers who are delinquent on their taxes… to step up and pay their tax debt to support critical government services,’’ said Commissioner Amy Pitter in the press release. “These taxpayers can catch up and pay their fair share without additional penalties.’’
This program covers tax types the October 2014 amnesty program did not cover. This includes corporate excise from financial institutions insurance, public utilities and banks, estate taxes, fiduciary income taxes, and individual use tax on motor vehicles. Participants of this program will not be eligible for a future tax amnesty program until 2025.
Taxpayers do not qualify if they have paid outstanding taxes and simply owe penalty fees, have settled agreements, or are involved in a tax-related investigation or prosecution. Those who don’t qualify but are facing economic hardship are encouraged to contact DOR as they might be eligible for a payment plan instead.
“A payment agreement may be a very good option for taxpayers who are experiencing economic difficulties,’’ said Commissioner Pitter. “Agreeing to a realistic monthly amount based on the taxpayer’s economic circumstances is beneficial to the taxpayer and DOR.’’
DOR has posted more information on their website.
