Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announces 2020 presidential campaign on SNL—with Tom Hanks

They were joking, right?

In the beginning, some people also discounted Donald Trump’s early presidential whims as a joke. So maybe we shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s comedic monologue during the season finale of Saturday Night Live.

Johnson, the episode’s host, continued to embrace the swirling, if wishful, speculation regarding his won potential political future upon making his entrance on the SNL stage last night. Even more, the former wrestler (like Trump) introduced his running mate: Fellow actor and frequent SNL host Tom Hanks.

“In the past, I never would’ve considered running for president,” Johnson said. “I mean, I didn’t think I was qualified at all, but now I’m actually worried that I’m too qualified.”

“The truth is America needs us,” Hanks said, adding that the only thing the country can agree on anymore is “pizza and us.”

After laying out their mostly movie-based credentials and strategy for winning the election, Johnson and Hanks conceded that their 2020 campaign was a joke.

“I just wanted to be on TV with Dwayne,” Hanks said.

“It’s just that when it comes to politics, we need more poise and less noise,” Johnson said. “Americans deserve strong capable leaders, leaders who care about this country and care about its people.”

Hanks pointed out that Johnson’s description sort of fit themselves. Cue the banner and confetti.

“Lets do it!” he said.
