John Oliver gives passionate Orlando tribute: ‘This just hurts’

The jokes were largely absent and the emotional pain was openly visible during John Oliver’s opening monologue addressing the Orlando shooting on Sunday night.

“Right now, this just hurts,” Oliver said at the beginning of his HBO show Last Week Tonight. “The worst thing is this pain is so familiar.”

Oliver’s words came the same day that a man attacked party-goers at an Orlando gay nightclub celebrating Latin Night, killing 49 and injuring 53 more before he was killed in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

But rather than focus on what he called the “dips— terrorist,” Oliver pointed to the Pulse nightclub instead as a symbol.

“For the record, I will happily embrace a Latin Night at a gay club in the ‘Theme Park Capital of the World’ as the ultimate symbol of what is truly wonderful about America,” he said.

Oliver also showed video of hundreds of people who had lined up to donate blood in Orlando after the attacks in an outpouring of support.

“It kind of reminds you that that terrorist dips— is vastly outnumbered,” he said.
