MassDOT launches 4th annual ‘Name a Snowplow’ contest
The contest is accepting name submissions from all Massachusetts students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced its fourth annual “Name a Snowplow” contest for elementary and middle school students statewide, according to city officials.
“Winter is coming and the Name A Snowplow contest is a fun way to engage with students and the communities we serve,” MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng said in a statement. “It gives our future leaders a chance to show their appreciation for the vital role our workforce plays as we plan and prepare for potential snow and ice events.”
Students will have the opportunity to name 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service this winter, city officials said. Applications for the contest can be submitted via an online portal.

There is no limit to the number of applications that can be submitted per school, officials said. After the selections are announced Dec. 19, winners will be invited to participate in a snowplow unveiling event.
The winners will be selected by a panel of MassDOT employees, who will choose two student submissions from each of the six Highway Division districts, according to city officials. One submission in each district will be chosen from kids in kindergarten through fourth grade, and the other will be chosen from kids in fifth grade through eighth grade.
Name submissions are due Dec. 5 at 5 p.m., according to officials. Each winning entry will also receive a $100 gift card for school supplies.

“To all Massachusetts students in kindergarten through eighth grade: we hope you will help us make this year’s contest the best one yet by sending us your most creative suggestions,” Undersecretary of Transportation and State Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said in the statement.
Winners from last year’s snowplow naming contest include Snowana, Control-Salt-Delete, Taylor Drift, Ice S’now More, Ice Ice Baby, It’s Snow Problem, Mac N’Freeze, Blizzard Buster, C 3 P Snow, Snow Force One, Abominable Plowman, and Meltin’ John.
