The Green, Orange, Blue, and Fitchburg lines will operate under service changes and closures in September, the MBTA announced last week.

Here’s a look at what to expect:

Green Line

From Sept. 3 to 11, service between Kenmore and Riverside will be suspended on the D branch.

The shutdown will allow for track improvements and Green Line Train Protection System infrastructure installments to prevent train collisions and enforce speed limits.

Shuttle buses will replace service with local buses stopping at all stops between Kenmore and Riverside, except at Beaconsfield. Express shuttle service will be offered between Copley and Riverside, Woodland, Waban, Eliot, and the Newton Highlands stops.

Riders should allot for a longer commute time with a predicted additional 30 to 45 minutes for travelers going from Riverside to Government Center.

Orange Line

Shuttle buses will replace service on the Orange Line between Forest Hills and North Station on two weekends: Sept. 13 to 14 and Sept. 27 to 28.

During the shutdown, the signal system will be upgraded to improve efficiency and schedule reliability.

Shuttle buses will stop at stations between Forest Hills and Back Bay, as well as at Copley. However, riders should use the Green Line for service between Back Bay and North Station as there will be no shuttle bus service between those stations.

There will be an increase in service on the Green Line, and the Commuter Rail will be free between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.

The MBTA recommends commuters anticipate an additional 30 minutes to their commute, specifically for riders traveling between Forest Hills and Downtown Crossing.

Jackson Square

The Orange Line will also undergo service changes at the Jackson Square station for accessibility upgrades in addition to the ongoing station modernization.

The Orange Line bound for Forest Hills will bypass the Jackson Square station after 9 p.m. on Sept. 17 to 19 and Sept. 24 to 26. Riders that typically exit at Jackson Square should exit at Stony Brook and board an Oak Grove train to Jackson Square.

Jackson Square will be closed in both directions all day on Sept. 20 and 21.

Blue Line

Blue Line service will be suspended between Airport and Bowdoin beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 and continuing throughout the weekend of Sept. 20 and 21.

Shuttle buses will replace service, but only the downtown loop shuttle will service Aquarium, State, and Government Center via Haymarket.

The local shuttles will stop at Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket for Orange and Green Line service.

Express shuttles will operate between Haymarket and Airport only.

By avoiding the downtown stops on the local and express shuttles, riders will save 15 minutes by avoiding downtown traffic.

The shutdown will allow for an upgrade to the line’s drainage system and pump room that safeguards the line from major rain and flooding. Other improvements will include upgrading tunnel lightening, overhead wires, and power cables, and replacing rail ties.

The Blue Line will be free between Wonderland and Airport, as will the East Boston Ferry.

Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line

The Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line will undergo service changes to replace rail ties.

Shuttle buses will replace service between Fitchburg and Wachusett from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 15 to 23.

Service on the line will be suspended from North Station to Porter Square from Sept. 20 to 21 and from Sept. 26 to 28. Riders should utilize the Red and Green lines for replacement service.
