Drivers on the Massachusetts Turnpike in the Newton and Weston areas should prepare themselves for “major delays” and “intense congestion” across two weekends later in May and June, NBC 10 Boston reported.

From 9 p.m. May 30 to 5 a.m. June 2 and again from 9 p.m. June 20 to 5 a.m. June 23, all but one lane will be closed in both directions between exits 123 and 125, causing estimated backups of up to two or three hours, according to NBC 10 Boston.

The expected traffic delays are due to a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) project to rehabilitate and replace eight bridges at the Interstate 90/Interstate 95 interchange on the border of Newton and Weston, according to MassDOT’s website.

Of the eight bridges, five will be replaced, one will be rehabilitated, and two will have their superstructure replaced, MassDOT said. During the closures, pre-fabricated bridge units will be installed to replace the existing bridge, which will be demolished, according to NBC 10 Boston.

The bridge which is expected to cause the weekend delays goes over the MBTA Commuter Rail tracks, so trains on the Worcester line will be shut down during the weekends, NBC 10 Boston reported. Amtrak service to Albany will also be affected, but free shuttle buses will replace the trains.
