Bose releases a speaker that kids can build on their own

Believing that hands-on exploration is the key to sparking a child's curiosity, Bose Corporation has officially launched BOSEbuild, the company's new "build-it-yourself" category focused specifically on kids. BOSEbuild's first product is the Speaker Cube, a complete kit that lets kids explore the science of sound by making a Bose Bluetooth(R) speaker - and use their creativity to personalize it with colors and covers. The BOSEbuild Speaker Cube is now available at build.bose.com for $149. It's intended for ages 8 and older - and for the kid in all of us. (PRNewsFoto/BOSE Corporation) PRNewsFoto/BOSE Corporation

If you’re looking for a way to get your children to put down their smartphones this summer, Framingham-based Bose has some ideas—and it could help jumpstart the next generation of engineers.

Young tech and music enthusiasts can now build and personalize their very own Bluetooth speaker thanks to the release of the Bose’s Speaker Cube.

The speaker is the first product produced by the company’s new “build-it-yourself” category called BOSEbuild, which focuses on “sparking the natural curiosity of kids.”

Even though the speaker is made with high-quality parts, Bose said in a press release that the Speaker Cube is made for durability and easy assembly—it’s recommended for ages 8 and up. The instructions are built for the tech crowd, too—they come in the form of a free app that mixes the step-by-step guide with lessons on how speakers work.

“It’s a great example of what we’d like BOSEbuild to offer – fun and relatable ways for kids to make something they really want and can use for years to come, while learning about the incredible science and technology behind it,” Bob Maresca, the company’s CEO and president said in a statement.

The buildable speaker costs $149 and can be purchased on the Bose website.
