New York, San Francisco, Miami. When you think of expensive accommodations for a trip in the U.S., these may come to mind first.

But when it comes to booking a place to stay through Airbnb, the online booking service that lets people rent their homes short-term to travelers, it doesn’t get any more pricey than here in Boston.

That’s according to data compiled by Berlin-based travel planning website GoEuro, which looked at median prices for Airbnb rentals in 150 cities around the world. The market here came out as the most pricey, with the typical nightly stay for a group of two to four people costing $274.

Cancun ranked second at $247, followed by New York ($237), Dubai ($226), and Macao ($213).

So it’s expensive to book an Airbnb stay in Boston. Then again, it’s expensive to rent in Boston period. Some studies show the city to have the third highest rents in the country.

The GoEuro research also showed a Boston Airbnb rental to be more expensive than a 5-star hotel room, but cautions not to make a direct comparison because the methods used to arrive at the figures differed. Factoring in the costs of hotels, hostels, and Airbnb, Boston ranked as the sixth most expensive city in which to book accommodations, with New York ranking first. (There, the world makes sense again.)

Mayor Marty Walsh’s administation and the City Council have kicked around the idea of regulating Airbnb, which has agreed to pay hotel taxes in San Francisco, but hasn’t taken action. Thousands of properties have been rented in Boston using the service.
