John Kerry gives shout-out to Boston sports fans in commencement speech

"Boston is the best sports town anywhere," he said.

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke at Northeastern's commencement ceremony Friday.

Before congratulating the Northeastern class of 2016 during his commencement address Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry took a moment to talk sports.

“Boston is the best sports town anywhere,” he said. “At the moment, for the Red Sox, ‘anywhere’ just happens to be first place, while the Yankees are in last. So don’t let anyone tell you our country is not moving in the right direction.”

The crowd responded with laughs and thunderous applause for the longtime Bostonian. But let’s not forget, this comes from the man who once called Big Papi “Manny Ortez,” and then, when he corrected himself pronounced “Or-TEEZ” as “Or-TEZZ.”

But hey, mistakes happen. Just like when Kerry accidentally botched the name of the Sox eighth inning anthem by calling it “Sweet Adeline.”

At least this time, he got it right.
