Here’s what Boston looks like as it digs out from massive January nor’easter

With school back open and beach chairs carefully positioned in shoveled-out parking spots, Boston is bouncing back from this past weekend’s blizzard. But it will be a while before the cleanup is complete.

The record-breaking storm dumped 23.6 inches of snow on Boston, tying the previous biggest one-day snow on record from 2003, according to the National Weather Service.

“We really need everyone’s help to dig out the sidewalk in front of your home and in front of your property, especially so that our young people can access bus stops, walk to school and anyone who is walking around, pedestrians, especially those in a wheelchair or motorized scooter, can get around,” Mayor Michelle Wu said in a press conference Sunday.

Still, the snow emergency ended as scheduled at 6 a.m. Monday, and Boston public schools opened Monday morning. Some schools around Boston did close or start late Monday, however; Boston 25 News has a running list of closures and delays online.

Two days after the storm, residents of the Greater Boston area are still digging out. Here’s a peek at how some of them are faring.

In her press conference Sunday, Wu asked people to be aware of where they are flinging snow when shoveling, so they don’t make more work for those clearing the streets

“It will make our city crew’s lives a lot, lot easier if, as you’re shoveling, do not shovel back into the street,” she said. “It is incredibly frustrating to clear the roads again and again and then to have some of it come from folks who are shoveling sidewalks into the street. So throw it the other direction.”

Meanwhile, if you’ve placed a chair, ironing board, Rubbermaid container or other object in your parking spot, please remember: Those must be removed by Wednesday at 6 a.m., per city policy.

When faced with an excess of fluffy snow Saturday and Sunday, some people in the Greater Boston area embraced their inner child and took to the outdoors.

Boston Common was overrun with bundled people making the most of the storm, even as the snow came down Saturday.

Winter sports weren’t just confined to the Common though. People were spotted throughout the state skiing, tubing and sledding down in unusual locations.

While the humans of the Greater Boston area certainly made the most of the weather, the pets of the area had their fair share of fun too.

Though some dogs jumped right in, others needed a bit to get used to the unfamiliar conditions.
