Watch: First 4K video from space captures the earth in astonishing detail
This is space as you’ve never seen it before – literally.
NASA released the first 4K Ultra High-Definition video from the International Space Station on Monday. The four minute clip, posted on YouTube, gives glimpses of the earth from space and life on board station, including an astronaut eating a “space cheeseburger.’’

“This important new capability will allow researchers to acquire high resolution – high frame rate video to provide new insight into the vast array of experiments taking place every day,’’ a statement on NASA’s YouTube page says of the video. “It will also bestow the most breathtaking views of planet Earth and space station activities ever acquired for consumption by those still dreaming of making the trip to outer space.’’
NASA says more UHD videos are coming. But if you don’t mind a lower quality picture, NASA has another project that allows you to watch the earth from space in real time.
The live stream is part of the agency’s High Definition Earth Viewing experiment, which couples a feed from HD cameras aimed at the earth from the station with a map tracking the station’s movement. The video blacks out when there is a loss of signal. But if you can catch it, the live stream will show you the movement of the earth even as you sit in front of your screen. It’s mesmerizing.
