Chris Sununu, the former Republic governor of New Hampshire, announced Tuesday he will not run for Senate in 2026, despite already having the backing of President Donald Trump for a bid.

Sununu revealed his decision during an interview with the “Pulse of New Hampshire,” saying “it’s just not right” for him and his family to seek the seat being vacated by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.

The announcement follows days after Trump told reporters he’d met with Sununu about a potential bid for the Senate.

“He came to my office, came to the Oval Office, and met with Chris Sununu, and I support him fully. I hope he runs,” Trump told reporters Sunday on Air Force One. “He’s been very nice to me over the last year or so, but no, I hope he runs. I think he’ll win that seat.”

Last week, New Hampshire Congressman Chris Pappas, a Democrat, announced he will run for Shaheen’s seat. Scott Brown, the former Massachusetts senator who served as ambassador to New Zealand during Trump’s first administration, is reportedly another potential candidate for the 2026 race.
