Rumors are swirling that President Donald Trump will attend the U.S.-Canada matchup at TD Garden Thursday night amid heightening tensions between both the teams and the countries.
The U.S. and Canada will play in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off, an international hockey tournament, at TD Garden Thursday, and the game is expected to be tense. The two teams’ first meeting in the tournament resulted in three fights in the first nine seconds. The Americans won 3-1 in Montreal.
Politics is in the background of the NHL-run tournament, which also included Finland and Sweden. Before Saturday’s game, Canadian fans in Montreal loudly booed the U.S. national anthem. Two days prior, fans also booed during “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the U.S. beat Finland.

Trump has repeatedly threatened Canada, one of the U.S.’s top allies and trading partners, with steep tariffs, which he paused until next month. The president has also implied he could take over the sovereign country, saying Canada should become the 51st state.
Earlier this month, Trump became the first president in office to attend a Super Bowl.
Bill Guerin, the general manager of the U.S. team, told Fox News Monday that he wants Trump in the audience at the final in Boston, cheering on the team for the 4 Nations title.
“We would love it if President Trump was in attendance,” Guerin said. “We have a room full of proud American players and coaches and staff. Listen, we’re just trying to represent our country the best way we can.”
Darren Dreger, a longtime Canadian hockey commentator, said on TSN 690 Montreal that Trump will likely attend, and that Guerin had “that inside information.”
“It is expected that President Trump will make his way into Boston. He may be there already, and he will be at that game. That’s the expectation, that’s what I was told likely yesterday,” Dreger said.
However, Daily Faceoff and its hockey insider Frank Seravalli said sources have indicated Trump won’t be in Boston.

The NHL, TD Garden, and the White House did not return a request for comment Wednesday night.
