Michelle Wu made history in Boston on Tuesday, becoming the first woman and first person of color elected to the mayor’s office in the city’s nearly 200-year history.
The 36-year-old city councilor at-large from Roslindale beat out fellow councilor Annissa Essaibi George and will take office on Nov. 16, taking the reins from Acting Mayor Kim Janey, who has served since former Mayor Marty Walsh left office for the Biden Administration more than six months ago.
Congratulations and celebratory messages poured in for Wu, a daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, from leaders around the commonwealth and across the country in the hours after her win.
Below, see what officials from Massachusetts are saying following Wu’s win.
Congratulations @WuTrain on a great race and your historic win. Soak it all in tonight – you’re the new Mayor of the best city in the world and I look forward to working with you
