Members of the Massachusetts congressional delegation immediately began condemning President Donald Trump’s selection of Judge Brett Kavanaugh Monday night to fill the seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.
Both Bay State Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren said on social media that they plan to vote against the nomination of the 53-year-old conservative judge.
Here’s what Massachusetts politicians are saying about Kavanaugh and what his nomination means for the future of the country’s highest court:
Sen. Ed Markey
If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed, women’s freedom to make decisions about their bodies, reforms to our health care system, the quality of our air and water, and much more will be at risk.

Brett Kavanaugh was the only nominee on Trump’s shortlist who has written that a sitting president should not be indicted. It’s not a coincidence that he was selected. #SCOTUSpick #WhatsAtStake

Sen. Elizabeth Warren
Brett Kavanaugh’s record as a judge and lawyer is clear: hostile to health care for millions, opposed to the CFPB & corporate accountability, thinks Presidents like Trump are above the law – and conservatives are confident that he would overturn Roe v. Wade. I’ll be voting no.

Rep. Jim McGovern
The President’s former campaign manager has been indicted on dozens of charges, including witness tampering, lying to investigators & conspiracy against the United States.

The President’s former foreign policy advisor has pled guilty to lying about meeting with Russian government officials.

Any of these cases could conceivably come before #SCOTUS.
Let that sink in for a minute.

Rep. Joe Kennedy III
Over the course of his career Judge Kavanaugh has used the bench to undermine worker rights, threaten access to healthcare, block efforts to curb gun violence and advance one conservative cause after another. Senate should reject. #SCOTUS

Rep. Katherine Clark
Trump said it himself: he would appoint a judge that’s anti-choice, anti-#ACA, and anti-worker. Well, tonight, he made this a reality through the nomination of #BrettKavanaugh.

So much is at stake w/ #SCOTUSnominee from voting rights to gun safety. We must stand up & insist that our next #SCOTUS Justice defends our freedoms, not erode them. #WhatsAtStake

Rep. Seth Moulton
[1/2] Our democracy depends on three independent branches of government checking and balancing one another. @POTUS’s#SCOTUS nomination jeopardizes this core function & injects the same partisanship into the courts that has crippled Congress and eroded confidence in the executive
— Seth Moulton (@sethmoulton) July 10, 2018
[2/2] Americans deserve justices and leaders who will earn our trust and move this country forward–not pull us into the past. Brett #Kavanaugh does not meet that standard. #ScotusPick
