George H.W. Bush says he always knew his wife, Barbara Bush, was “the most beloved woman in the world.”
“In fact, I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact,” the 93-year-old former Republican president said in a statement released Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the family announced the death of the former first lady.
“But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at The Enforcer is lifting us all up,” he said.
Bush, the 92-year-old matriarch, whose popularity once eclipsed that of her husband, was remembered as a “true American,” “devoted mother,” and “terrific literacy advocate” by politicians across the ideological spectrum following her passing Tuesday. According to his office, the 41st president was “broken-hearted” to lose his his wife of 73 years and “was at her side when [she] left this good earth.”
“We have faith she is in heaven, and we know life will go on — as she would have it,” Bush said in his statement Wednesday. “So cross the Bushes off your worry list.”
