As questions of loyalty flew on the other side of the Capitol, Rep. Joe Kennedy III took the opportunity to give a speech on the subject Thursday.

In an anticipated Senate hearing, James Comey testified that President Donald Trump had asked for the former FBI director’s personal loyalty, which Trump reportedly denies doing.

However, in the midst of the ongoing investigations into Trump’s associates’ ties to Russia, it was the president’s loyalty to which Kennedy turned.

In a two-minute speech on the House floor, the Newton Democrat juxtaposed the issues afflicting disadvantaged families with the question of whether Trump “put his own personal and political interests above the interests of the American people?”

“The real victims of this investigation’s ‘cloud’ are our constituents,” Kennedy said, alluding to the verbiage Comey said Trump used to describe the probes.

The Massachusetts congressman has been a relentless critic of the Republican president’s policies and, without citing specifics, questioned if Trump’s actions relating to the investigation “compromised” the country.

“There’s been an awful lot of talk about loyalty in the past 24 hours,” Kennedy said. “Lets be very, very clear. The American people should never have to reassured about the loyalty on their commander-in-chief.”
