Mitt Romney calls Kathy Griffin’s mock beheading of Trump ‘repugnant’ and ‘vile’

Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney devoted his infrequently used Twitter account Tuesday to denouncing a photo shoot by comedian Kathy Griffin.

In the shoot with Hollywood photographer Tyler Shields, Griffin held up what appeared to be President Donald Trump’s fake severed heard. In a behind-the-scenes video, Griffin said that she and Fields were not afraid to “make noise” and joked that they could be imprisoned for the provocative photo shoot.

Romney, who was a forceful critic of Trump’s own divisive rhetoric during last year’s campaign, said Griffin’s stunt was an unprecedented descent into “even more repugnant [and] vile territory.”

On Twitter, Griffin said she does not condone violence and was simply “mocking the Mocker in Chief.” Hours after posting, she deleted her original tweets promoting the photo shoot and offered an apology.
