France election excitement prompts question: Why don’t we vote on weekends?

No one knows whether France’s election on Sunday will elevate Marine Le Pen, the far-right firebrand, or Emmanuel Macron, her centrist opponent. But one thing seems certain: French voters will head to the polls in droves.

In recent years, more than 70 percent of France’s voting-age population has cast ballots in presidential elections, compared to about 55 percent in American presidential elections.

The sharp disparity has renewed a long-running debate about whether American elections should be held on weekends, in an effort to make voting easier and more convenient.
