Massachusetts’s Jim McGovern declares Dunkin’ Donuts the ‘best coffee in the world’ during House committee hearing

What state is he from again? Oh right.

During the House Rules Committee’s hearing Wednesday on the Republicans’ health care bill, Rep. Jim McGovern made a polarizing statement, cutting to the center of an interminable and fractious debate.

“I want to thank the Rules staff for getting Dunkin’ Donuts coffee from Massachusetts,” McGovern, a Worcester native, said in his opening remarks, holding up a small white cup.

“It’s the best coffee in the world.”

The Bay State Democrat also said he hoped everyone had “fueled up on coffee and doughnuts” before the start of Wednesday’s hearing, “because we’ve got a lot to say about this bill, and none of it is good.”

McGovern went on to decry the potential effects of the American Health Care Act and (unsuccessfully) asked Republicans not to move forward until they received an assessment from the Congressional Budget Office on the revised bill’s effects.

However, it was his firstmost assertion that became the subject of light-hearted banter among skeptical reporters and the congressman’s staff.

While the quality of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and the Republican health care bill can be put up to debate, one thing that is beyond reproach is how engrained the Canton-based company has become in New England culture.

McGovern’s remarks Wednesday wouldn’t be the first time a local politician provided a reminder of such in the midst of a heated Capitol Hill battle.
