Sen. Elizabeth Warren is calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign following revelations reported by The Washington Post that the former Alabama senator spoke with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. during the 2016 election.

“This is not normal. This is not fake news,” Warren said her statement. “This is a very real and serious threat to the national security of the United States. We need a special prosecutor totally independent of the AG. We need a real, bipartisan, transparent Congressional investigation into Russia.”

Top Republicans called Thursday for Sessions to recuse himself from federal investigations of whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Warren, who was a vocal critic of Sessions’s appointment to head the Justice Department, joined other key Democratic leaders in demanding that Session step down. Rep. Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that Sessions “is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country,” accusing the attorney general of lying under oath during his confirmation hearing before the Senate.

Warren isn’t the only member of the Massachusetts delegation saying it is not enough for Sessions to just recuse himself from the investigation.

Last month, Warren was ultimately barred from saying anything on the Senate floor about the Alabama Republican after she attempted to read a letter by Coretta Scott King, violating an arcane Senate rule.

The revelations about Sessions follow last month’s resignation of national security advisor Michael Flynn after it was reported he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about his contacts with Russia.
