What did first lady Michelle Obama do as Americans waited with bated breath for the presidential election results on election night?

She slept.

“I went to bed. I don’t like to watch the political discourse; I never have,” Obama told People magazine, adding of her husband, “I barely did with him.”

Obama discussed the election night in an interview for a People magazine feature called “People at the White House: The Final Interview.”

Obama campaigned tirelessly for Hillary Clinton. Her famous words, “When they go low, we go high,” became an unofficial slogan for the Clinton campaign.

“Once you do what you can do, then the rest is easy,” Obama said. “It was in the hands of the American people.”

She told People she stands by everything she said on the campaign trail.

“This is our democracy and this is how it works,” Obama said. “We are ready to work with the next administration and make sure that they are as successful as they can be. Because that’s what’s best for the country.”
