Would President-elect Donald Trump want “one of the dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics” to be in his future cabinet?

Would Mitt Romney be interested in working with a man he called  “a phony” and “a fraud,” among other things?

According to multiple reports: Maybe so.

As CNN first reported Thursday afternoon, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee will meet with Trump this weekend to talk about a potential role for Romney in the president-elect’s cabinet.

NBC reported that role is secretary of state, according to an unnamed source “close to Trump with direct knowledge of the president-elect’s thinking.” A source with Trump’s transition team described it as a “healing meeting” to the Associated Press.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, a close Trump ally, confirmed the meeting to reporters inside Trump Tower later in the afternoon. According to Politico, Romney is “seen as unlikely to be a cabinet member — his outreach is regarded as more about making peace.”

Aides for Romney did not returns calls and emails requesting comment Thursday afternoon.

The varying reports were received with mixed reactions.

A source close to Romney confirmed earlier this week that the former governor called to congratulate Trump following the latter’s election night win last week. Trump later tweeted that the call was “very nice.”
