The day still dawned in Massachusetts, as everyone assured it would.

But for a state that resoundingly rejected the man who was just elected president, a state whose leading Democrats had ridiculed Donald J. Trump on Twitter and likened his rise to that of Adolf Hitler, the political prospects sure looked bleak.
