Long before her name was on the ballot as a presidential candidate, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton expressed hope that a woman would one day pursue the nation’s highest office. In a 1993 interview with Tom Brokaw, newly-elected President Bill Clinton and then-first lady Hillary Clinton weighed in on the possibility of a woman running for president.“What I’m hoping is that I’m able to make my contribution and then any spouse after me, uh, women and men, will feel as free as they can to do what is right for them and that includes a little or as much of a role as is appropriate,” Hillary Clinton said.

When Brokaw asked President Clinton how long it would be before the country had a “first husband,” the Commander in Chief said he didn’t think it would be long before a woman ran for the office he held.

“I think a woman will be elected president probably in my lifetime,” he said. “I certainly hope that women will have a chance to run.”
