New Hampshire cafe urges patrons to vote through latte art

With the minutes ticking down to Election Day, Brewbakers Café in Keene, New Hampshire, is stenciling a special message on its beverages: Vote.

Owner Jeff Murphy said the note to its coffee customers Monday morning was partly inspired by a visit by Gov. Maggie Hassan, the Democratic challenger for Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte’s seat. But he said his baristas would continue adding the message to drinks over the next couple of days.

Reminding his patrons of their civic duty with a cup of joe isn’t something new. Murphy said baristas at Brewbakers Café used a ‘Vote’ stencil on drinks during the presidential primary this year. Brewbakers’ baristas can decide whether or not they want to stencil the reminder, but Murphy said doing so has become a tradition.

Another perk for civic-minded patrons: Anyone who comes into the cafe with an “I Voted” sticker gets a free cookie.

“Up here in New Hampshire, we’re kind of at the heart of it all,” Murphy said, adding that presidential candidates, campaign staffers, and state officials over the years have all passed through the cafe on Main Street.

“It’s just part of our DNA here,” Murphy said of politics in New Hampshire.

He said residents of the Granite State have an opportunity being in a swing state that votes early.

“We’re in a unique position to have our voice heard loud and early,” Murphy said.
