Donald Trump is reportedly doing a pre-debate warm-up event in New Hampshire
Ahead of Sunday’s second presidential debate, Donald Trump is reportedly heading to New Hampshire for a warm-up of sorts.
As NH1 first reported Wednesday, the Republican nominee is holding a private campaign event Thursday in the small, southern New Hampshire town of Sandown. The Trump campaign told WMUR attendance to the “town hall-style event” will be by invitation only.
It’s perhaps no coincidence that the upcoming debate Sunday, the second of three such events, will be held in a town-hall format, with candidates taking live questions from audience members.
According to WMUR, the event will be held at Sandown Town Hall—a small building with an occupancy limit of 200 people—which the campaign described as a “small, intimate setting” (as opposed to the larger halls and arenas in which Trump usually holds his energized rallies).
As NH1 reported, the town hall is the same place New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie held his first presidential campaign event in New Hampshire last summer.
According to the Washington Post, Christie is advising Trump on the town hall tactics, including the “importance of body language and presence.” As the Post notes, Christie has held more 130 town hall events since he took office in New Jersey in 2010 and “used those often-combative sessions to raise his national profile.”
After a consensus loss in the first debate, Trump has reportedly been urged by advisers to focus more on debate prep sessions in anticipation of Sunday’s rematch in St. Louis. As CNN wrote Wednesday, Thursday’s event in New Hampshire is seen as a “tuneup.”
Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has prepared for the debates in private.
